Coffee. . .tea. . .or a pastry chef sweeter than any confection. . .

Yet she is unaware that with each morsel--and flash of ankle--she is seducing the handsome marquess frequenting her father's tea shop. Unmarried at twenty-six, Alys's first love is the family business. But thoughts of the gentleman's touch are driving her to distraction. . .

With his weakness for sugar, the Marquess of Hatbrook can imagine no more desirable woman than one scented with cake and spice. Mistaking Alys for a mere waitress, he has no doubt she would make a most delicious mistress. And when he finds himself in need of an heir, he plans to make her his convenient bride. Yet as they satisfy their craving for one another, business and pleasure suddenly collide. Will Hatbrook's passion for sweets--and for Alys--be his heart's undoing?

The Marquess of Cake Redcakes Book 1 edition by Heather Hiestand Literature Fiction eBooks

I liked the premise of this story but not the author's style. The first chapter went smoothly enough, with Alys and Michael meeting. Alys came off as kind of mean and pushy. She's an eyeball roller. Michael is addicted to sweets in a way that I found to be strange. The author gave to much explanation instead of moving the story along. Getting from scene to scene seemed contrived and boring. These people were interesting in a way, though I wasn't invested in them as a romance. I quit reading, but may attempt to pick it up again later.

The Marquess of Cake Redcakes Book 1 edition by Heather Hiestand Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I liked this story but have to say it plodded along. The writing struck me as being choppy. I found it hard to follow at times.

The heroine, Alys, is the eldest daughter of a man in trade. The family owns a bakery and a tea shop. Alys has worked for her father since she was a young girl, and she is a master at decorating cakes. The family has become rich and her father is recognized by the Queen.

This puts her father in the mind of further bettering his children by getting out of trade. He doesn't think there is much hope for Alys or his only surviving son, but his younger daughters would have the chance to marry well. The son had been in service to his country and had returned home wounded and somewhat bitter. He really has little interest in working for his father. But Alys loves the tea shop and has no idea her father wants to sell it.

She meets the hero, Michael, one day while working in the shop. He has an overpowering weakness for sweets and the tea shop is one of his favorite spots. The author gives us a good understanding that there is a problem with Michael's blood sugar levels.

The relationship moves along slowly as the couple run into each other, and as it turns out their brothers have served together. The pair are attracted to each other but she knows she is out of his league, and he doesn't think she has the personality of the sort of woman he plans to marry.

The younger sisters are a pain in the patoot -- silly and spoiled. Later in the story one of them betrays Alys but that is never fully explained.

Alys and Michael do marry but that is when their real problems begin. She is out of her element in an aristocratic marriage. He has to deal with a wife who has her own ideas of what she wants, which is to have an occupation. The possibility that his brother had been killed is one of the reasons they quickly married, but word is received the report may be wrong. They aren't sure how they feel about each other.

I did like it overall but had to push myself to finish it.
There were parts that I really enjoyed and parts had me scratching my head. The writing wasn't even in how the character's acted. There were times I loved the H, and then he would do and say something that seemed out of character.

Also, at times I felt a connection to our H and h, and then bam - they felt like strangers. They seemed to have a better understanding of each other when they first met.

The lovemaking was somewhat descriptive. Because my feeling for the couple were all over the place, I didn't feel the passion when they made love.

The book is priced just above $1, and I'd say it is worth it. But, right now I have the second book in the series on my wish list because it is priced at $1.99 and I wouldn't want to pay that for this book, so waiting to see if it will drop in price.

I did like the uniqueness of the story, and it does pull at your heartstrings on how women couldn't have a brain, nor work outside the home. This story takes place less than 130 in the past and as the saying goes WE'VE COME A LONG WAY BABY, but still along way to go in wages - right?!!

The character's will have you loving them or hating them, they are all over the place in the feelings that will bring out in you. I always like to mention if there is a cliffhanger, and it is hard to explain in this story. Only one small question regarding our H/h has you wondering. There is more to know about the brother too. I understand this is a series, and most author's don't do an epilogue because they continue the story in the next book, but I love Epilogues. We do get HEA and the road isn't smooth sailing either.

I did have a question as to how Rose discovered something (not telling a spoiler) near the end of the story about our H/h that wasn't explained.

So yes, I recommend this book, but it isn't going to be the best Regency Story you've read, so keep that in mind. (ljb)
Readers you complain and downgraded your reviews because you did not guess and discover that this is about something new being discovered and diagnosed only then. This is not a Spoiler Because it is the Whole Premise of This Book. Did You Guess It Yet? DIABETES people. Now Do You Get This Book? If So Regrade your Reviews To Higher Stars. I Caught The Problem Instantly And Understood It. So Reread This Book And Change Your Review If Polite. Sorry But After Reading these Reviews Nobody Figured It Out! Alas And Okay That is why I had to let You Know What You All Missed... Go Figure. Now Read this Again And Your Whole Outlook Will Be Changed As You Finally Understand Exactly What This Book Entails. I Thought Wow She Brought Up A Killing And Debilitating Disease Not Understood Or Even Discovered, Diagnosed or even Treated yet. This was just barely understood. Now it is so common and treated daily with commercials daily.
I didn't care for Alys, the heroine of this story. She was very selfish and self-involved. She only reacted to things based on how they affected her. For instance (SPOILER), when her husband found out his brother might not have died overseas as he had been told, Alys's immediate and only reaction is to be upset over what this may mean for her and her marriage. No relief that a beloved brother might be alive, nothing. WTF? Who thinks like that? And the immaturity and selfishness seems to be a family trait. Alys's sister Matilda is also completely self-absorbed and stupid, to boot.
I liked the basic premise of the story, and the hero, Michael (though I question his taste in friends), but Alys and her sister were awful. Not a keeper.
